I'm Just Saying…

Time Keeps on Ticking Ticking Ticking, Into the Future

October27

This is how we know I’m losing my mind…

I was convinced that the clocks changed for day light savings time this past Sunday.   Completely convinced.   In fact I lived my entire Sunday and the first part of Monday under the assumption that the clocks had in fact been changed.   But the clocks don’t change until this upcoming Sunday.   I am so confused.

Clearly, I blame ABN.   He had an early morning flight to Vancouver and had announced weeks ago that he was concerned he would miss his flight because of the time change.   For a moment let’s ignore the fact, that even if the time had changed, it would have fallen backwards and thus, in the worst case scenario he would have arrived at his flight an hour earlier than necessary – but really, that’s not the issue.   The issue is that he changed his clock and I changed my clock and we went to bed.

When his alarm went off it read 7:30am and my clock read 7:30am and we got up.   Then I put on my new watch (gold – think Rachel Zoe…I die) and remarked out loud “cool – my new watch changed itself for daylight savings time” (no, I didn’t take the time to think about whether or not this was possible, it was just cool.   I turned on my tv, checked my email – all the settings had adjusted (as they should) and we proceeded with our day.   I dropped ABN at the airport.   I ran errands.   I watched tv and did laundry.   And I went to bed and woke up and got to work.   And it wasn’t until I was waiting (endlessly) for my computer to boot-up that I noticed that my small, heart-shaped clock that sits on my desk read the same time that my watch read.   And I know that my heart-clock does not update itself (it’s just not that kind of clock).   And then I started thinking…maybe new watch (which is awesome) didn’t update itself.   And so I did what any girl with a question would do: I googled daylight savings time.

And it turns out – we don’t change our clocks until THIS Sunday.   All of this leaves me with a number of unanswered questions.   1. Did ABN really change his clock?   2. Did I change my clock?  And if I did, did it know enough to change itself back because when I got home yesterday afternoon it read the correct time?   3. did I live my entire Sunday an hour off?   4. will I know the real time ever again?   5. what is time?

Last night when I couldn’t fall asleep (maybe because I was attempting to go to bed an hour too early, or too late?) I realized this is a great distraction from the other things going on in my life right now.  And so I stayed up all night, obsessing about the time.

I know you’ve lost your mind when you wrote the phrase: “what is time?”
