Nesting
Something quite odd is going on with me.
Sure, I’ve always liked to cook. And I enjoy a clean space, there is no arguing with that. And sure, you don’t have to twist my arm to do laundry (try, multiple loads, multiple times a week). But yesterday I woke up with an itch – a domestic itch – that just couldn’t seem to scratch away…no matter what I did.
It started with two loads of laundry. After transferring the second load from washer to dryer, taking time to setup the drying rack for those fragile items that don’t do well in the tumble cycle, I headed to SAFEWAY with a list in hand. We needed some basics – milk, cereal, yogurt, sugar and soy sauce; but last week also received our first box from the CSA that we joined (I know, we’re SO san Francisco) and I wanted too use some of the fruits and veggies – but I needed proteins. And so…proteins did I buy. Chicken breasts chicken and a turkey breast (this time with a BONE!), which is currently sitting in my refrigerator absorbing all the yummy seasoning.
When I got home – I got to work. I’ve had season 2 of NIP/TUCK on my coffee table for the past two seeks so I set my laptop up on the kitchen counter and watched them slice and splice, while I chopped and grated (okay…it was sort of a gross choice…but I love having a TV in my kitchen…LOVE).
Here’s what I made:
SMOTHERED CHICKEN – which we ate last night. The smothered part comes from the amount of onions that you cover the chicken with while you cook – there’s no room for those breasts to breathe. And I threw in some red potatoes too. We ate some last night, but there is enough for ABN to have leftovers tonight as well – and maybe me, when I get home late.
TURKEY BREAST – okay, all I did yesterday was watch and season, but look how far I’ve come since the last time I tried. I actually bought the right piece of meat. Now the question is how many days can it sit in my fridge before I actually cook it – I’m hoping it can hold out until Tuesday…Thoughts?
APPLESAUCE – apples came as part of our CSA – a whole lot of apples. And while the recipe I use calls for the granny smith variety – the ones that I used worked just fine. I used a little less honey because I sorta had a feeling the sweetness would already be there, and I was right.
BOK CHOY with MUSHROOMS – no, I didn’t buy the bok choy – that was another item in the CSA box. And I had to look up a recipe because I had know idea where to begin (okay, I had some idea, but I’ve been married to ABN so long and he always follows a recipe so I decided to follow suit – also, I didn’t want to mess it up). The secret was definitely the peanut oil…YUM.
TUNA – this might not sound so exciting but I make tuna a special way – well, my mom made tuna a special way when I was growing up and I follow her example. It involves hard boiled eggs and it is SO good. I made enough for a sandwich each day for a week. I know, I know, I’m not supposed to eat that much tuna…so I’ll probably only have it twice. But I also might have it more. It’s just so good.
Chocolate Chip Cookies – I still had another episode of NIP/TUCK so I decided, why not. They made the house smell super yummy and ABN super happy. When chocolate chip cookies come out – there is really nothing better.
In addition, I folded all the laundry and even – wait for it – ironed! I know, it’s like a domestic diva has hijacked my soul.
Thank you
