Shrinky Dinks and Pop Chips
disclaimer – i wrote this yesterday. and as expected today included no pop chips and no shrinky dinks
at 10 of 6 tonight i found myself sitting at my desk at work, writing a blog post. i probably should have been balancing my petty cash or filing the latest invoice from DISCOUNT ART SUPPLY or at least writing the ode to my staff i plan to serenade them with on friday morning. but the truth was, that for the first time in almost 9 weeks i had nothing on my plate that had to get done in that very instant and so…i blogged. its been so long since i had time to blog at work, even after hours, that i forgot that for some reason whenever i go to spell check – the fucker freezes and i loose everything – there’s no evidence that i was ever there…mragh.
and so i start again…
today was the last first day of the summer. the last start of a session. the last monday. its absolutely insane to me to think that this summer is almost over. that first first day feels as if it was a million years ago and at the same time, these weeks have all blended together and i just can’t fathom what it will feel like to wake up and not have 250 kids screaming my name. i get that while we’re close to the end there are still 4 very full, very real days left and 4 days allow for plenty of time for mistakes to happen – for feelings to change. especially as we get close to the end, and we’re tired and overwhelmed. so since we’re not quite at the end, i’ll simply recap my day…
6am – alarm goes off and i do a double snooze for 20 minutes (that’s right, my alarm has the ability to double, triple, all the way to a 60 minute snooze…to this point i’ve kept myself in check at only a double double…i hate myself for becoming a snoozer).
6:40am – shower and get dressed
7am – get back in bed (which i haven’t done since i was in high school – my first high school)
7:20am – run out of house
7:40am – arrive at work a full 5 minutes before the AM Care counselors so that i maintain the appearance of being totally on top of my shit
8:30am – check-in campers – one last time
9:15am – mifcad – BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOker tov (every camper this summer knows the dance)
9:45am – eat my first of 3 bags of pop chips
10am – make shrinky dinks with a group of very happy campers
11am – decide to clean my desk
11:15am – find huge box of snack size mike and ikes – eat like 12
12pm – throw out massive amounts of old marketing materials creating storage room under my desk
1pm – hang out with first graders – doing fuse bead art
1:30pm – eat second bag of pop chips which i don’t feel badly about considering there are only 8 chips in each bag
2pm – shira (singing!)
3pm – discovered the PEZ MUSEUM
3:05pm – found out you can take BART to the pez museum
3:10pm – found out admission to the pez museum is $1
3:15pm – ran around letting everyone know about their upcoming field trip the pez museum
4:05pm – had a mom scream at me – but it was my first one of the summer, she was totally wrong and i didn’t cry so i win!
4:15pm – played catch with a camper in the staff lounge, near computers
4:20pm – ate my 3rd bag of pop chips
4:30-5:50pm – sat at the office manager’s desk (he’s on vacay) answering the camp hotline, calling kids from PM care and doodling the day away.
i could get used to not being super stressed out – every second of every day. tomorrow i plan to try to hit the gym (after what i ate today…i need it). and wednesday i’m off on the lake trip. let the countdown begin…
Thank you
