I'm Just Saying…

Tomorrow’s Friday and I’m Wearing Jeans

March19

tuesday, way back on my second day of work, i was asked to stop by one of the after school classrooms.  the 2nd and 3rd graders were discussing the women’s movement – i don’t know why.  but hey, why not.  its never too early.  anyway, i walk in the room and all the kids are sitting on the rug looking up, so excited to see someone new.  immediately they are tugging on my pant leg and asking a million questions.  do i know this person and that person.  no.  i know no one.  i started yesterday.  and i’m overwhelmed.  the other women come into the room and we begin: tell us your name, what you do and what the women’s movement means to you.  my name is LBN, i am the director of camp and family programs [immediate and uninhibited applause] and to me the women’s movement isn’t just about women, but it’s about possibility.  a long time ago women didn’t have equal rights to men.  with a lot of hard work and dedication and fighting (not with fists but with words) the world became a different place for women.  and so the women’s movement makes me believe that with the same hard work we can make changes so that all people have equal rights.

nothing. blank stares.  nose picking.

then the kids were allowed to ask us questions: what’s your favorite color – red.  what’s your favorite food – grandma’s chocolate cake.  what’s your favorite animal – peacock.  what’s your favorite district in san frnacisco (SERIOUSLY) – the mission, in addition to grandma’s chocolate cake, i also enjoy a burrito.  what’s your favorite hobby – i like to cook – does anyone here like matzah ball soup?

young asian boy, who, although young, is significantly bigger than the other kids in the group, clenches his fists, squints his eyes and squeals, “I LOVE MATZAH BALL SOUP!”

well, this weekend i made a huge pot of matzah ball soup for passover, but i still have to make the matzah balls.

young asian boy, “I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH”

after all the questions i got a chocolate chip cookie and lemonade.  i think i love my job.
