Working Woman
today i was paid to try on clothes. seriously. how did i not work in retail until now? don’t get me wrong, i know it won’t last. i know that in the next few days, or weeks i will be dreaming of the days of teaching a 4th grade hebrew school class while one of my students constantly bangs his head against the wall, calling parents to tell them that their teenage daughters have made sexually inappropriate videos while alone at night in their cabin, leading discussions about “SAM” and the rising water levels of stress that he/she is struggling with. but for now, for now i REALLY like that i was paid to try on clothes.
there was a point to the fashion show. we, the new hires, needed to learn about fit and the new fall line and apparently, the best way to learn is to do. in case anyone is curious, the MARTIN is more of a classic, straight leg, while the JACKSON has more curve and therefore works better for those of us with hips. what was news to me was that the fit has nothing to do with the waistband or cuff, only the fit (okay, i guess i should have been able to figure that out). so when you walk through the store, you really can’t tell what type of pant it is until you look at the tag. have i mentioned that the store is huge…it is HUGE. out of control, biggest store ever.
it turns out that in retail you have to work on the weekend which is not exactly to my liking…but i think i figured out a way to not work every weekend, or at least to be sundays from 5 until close (whatever that means). i sort of thought that with my extremely flexible schedule i would be able to get out of weekends entirely but for now…i still don’t know my schedule, which i find frustrating. i’m going back on friday and hopefully i will know more.
today i worked for 4 hours and made a little more than $40…i then spent $10 on a pair of tights (in sf, people wear tights in the summer….hmmmm). at this rate…well at this rate i’m going to have to get a second job
.
Thank you

Ahhh, retail. I spent a good part of my working life in retail, and plenty of that time trying on clothes. My advice to you is to get comfortable shoes. Don’t worry about them being cute, you won’t care about that after 10 hours of standing.
Good luck with your job!
